Can hypnosis really cure your fear of flying? I’m sure that question has crossed your mind several times, and many nervous flyers have reported success.
Let’s start with discussing what hypnosis really is. According to Wikipedia, hypnosis can be described as;
a wakeful state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility, with diminished peripheral awareness.
Hypnosis is not a form of unconsciousness – as is the long term belief of many – but is purely a form of extreme focus. Do not be put off by the joke hypnotherapists that you see on stage. Hypnosis does not involve you running around making chicken noises or similar.
The fear of flying is a state of mind. Even those of you that understand how safe flying is can still suffer from this phobia. I could tell you over and over again that flying is statistically safer than riding a bike, but it will not make any difference. Your sub-conscious mind will not release you from your fear.
That’s where hypnosis can help you. Back to Wikipedia again, that states that hypnosis can result in;
…changes in subjective experience, alterations in perception, sensation, emotion, thought or behavior – American Psychological Association’s Division 30
There is evidently a strong suggestion that fear of flying hypnosis CAN prove successful. In future weeks I will be talking to hypnotherapists who deal with fear of flying sufferers for more detailed information on HOW they can help – so look out for that.
I will also be covering self-hypnosis soon. Yes, it appears you can hypnotise yourself! Whether it works or not, we will see.
