This is the first in a series of free fear of flying help tips that I will be writing here at Flying Fear. To make sure you don’t miss out on any of them, go to, and bookmark this page: Free Fear of Flying Help Tips.
So, on to the first tip;
This one may sound odd, but it does work – you’ve just got to trust me on this one! Ready? Ok, here goes…….
Once a week, go to the airport and watch aircraft take off and land for at least one hour
I’m not implying you turn into a ‘plane spotter’, and start noting registrations, and aircraft types. There is nothing to stop you from doing so of course, but it’s not really the aim here
What you are aiming to do is allow your sub-conscious mind to see that flying is safe. Sounds stupid right?! Without going too much into detail with regards to the human mind (mainly because I don’t understand something quite that complex!), it’s widely believed by lots of very intelligent people that seeing constant images of an event will register sub-consciously (as well as consciously of course).
So, by seeing planes landing safely for an hour every week, you are imprinting that image in your sub-conscious memory. After a certain amount of time, you will naturally start to associate flying with a feeling of safety.
I’m by no means implying that simply going to the airport once a week is going to cure your flying phobia, but it’s one step towards getting on a flight.
For those of you that don’t live near an airport, try this instead. Go to the arrivals board of your nearest airport on the Internet, and watch it closely for an hour or two. This may not be as effective as seeing the aircraft landing, but it will still start to imprint in your mind the number of flights that are landing without incident.
