Anxiety

I created Flying Fear (this website) for YOU – the fearful flyer – a year ago with one main goal, to help as many of you overcome your debilitating fear as possible. Whether it’s email support, or the articles on the site, I hope I’ve contributed the best I can.

As regular readers will already know, I am a Flight Attendant and NOT a psychologist. In fact, I have zero training in counselling, or any other form of self help. I just wanted to use my expertise in flying to help out where possible.

BUT, the fear of flying can be a complicated phobia which sometimes requires more expertise than I can possibly offer. It’s an irrational fear that can ruin family, social, and work life. Of course, I don’t really need to tell you this…..you know it already.

For more severe aviaphobics, I often recommend various fear of flying courses. In this article I’m going to share with you my top 3 recommended online fear of flying courses. All the courses below are available instantly online, and can be downloaded directly to your computer for your convenience. So, let us begin by counting down from 3 to 1 (1 being my top recommendation); Click to See The Top 3 Online Fear of Flying Courses

There are plenty of books out there on the fear of flying, or more accurately, how to overcome it. I would always recommend buying one that features psychologists AND aviation experts as both aspects are important.

A new book has recently been published that meets this criteria. Entitled Overcome Your Fear of Flying it is written by two psychologists and a pilot, and looks at effective skills and techniques you can use to help reduce the anxiety commonly associated with flying.

A word of caution – I have not read this book myself so cannot comment on its effectiveness. If anyone has seen a copy, please review it below.

I have posted the message regarding this book as I know many of you are looking for a cheaper option than a full fear of flying course. Despite recommending anyone that can afford to to invest in Tom Bunn’s SOAR Fear of Flying Course, this book may provide some answers to those who need help – and it’s available for just £5.99 from Amazon.

There is no point in pretending the incident involving Flight AF447 did not happen – it’s all over the world’s media. So, I want to share my thoughts with you, the fearful flyer;

We do not know WHAT has caused the incident, so there is no point in focusing on it. Focusing on an incident that has not been investigated yet simply causes more anxiety. Until we know how the aircraft came down, don’t think about it…. Easier said than done, I know.

To sell newspapers – or gain viewers – the media needs to ‘imply’ a reason, and that is exactly what they are doing. Simply because the captain had reported enetering severe turbulence the media are ‘implying’ that this could be the cause. But turbulence does not just bring an aircraft down.

Neither does lightning. So all these media stories of the aircraft coming down whilst experiencing turbulence and a possible lightning strike are unfounded – and misleading (especially to someone who is nervous about flying already).

That is why I ask you NOT to focus your attention on this incident – and ESPECIALLY how the media are reporting it. It will NOT help you.

For those of you who are flying soon and are struggling to come to terms with this incident then try the SOAR Fear of Flying program – CLICK HERE
